Board Chair Gloria Flach and Rich Buckley of AstraZeneca
Baltimore, MD – The Maryland Business Roundtable for Education (MBRT), a nonprofit coalition of leading employers that have made a long-term commitment to support education reform and improve student achievement in Maryland, announced at its 24th Annual Meeting last month that AstraZeneca will join its Board of Directors, effective immediately. AstraZeneca will be represented by Richard Buckley, Vice President, North America Corporate Affairs.
In his role on the MBRT board, Mr. Buckley will play an integral part in MBRT’s mission to bring the voice of business to support high standards, rigorous assessments and strong accountability in K-12 education, and to demonstrate the connection between achievement in school and success in the workplace, in college and in life.
As Vice President, North America Corporate Affairs, Mr. Buckley is responsible for U.S. federal and state government affairs for AstraZeneca, as well as: public policy; corporate, product, and employee communications; corporate responsibility; ally development; and community relations. He has dotted-line responsibility for Canada Corporate Affairs, overseeing the alignment of global best practices and talent management, and strategic continuity with Corporate Affairs globally. He serves on both the U.S. Leadership Team and the Global Corporate Affairs Leadership Team for AstraZeneca.
“It is a privilege to welcome Rich Buckley to MBRT’s Board of Directors,” said Brian Dulay, Executive Director of Maryland Business Roundtable for Education. “The combination of Mr. Buckley’s experience in the life sciences sector and his company’s sustained commitment to education will benefit MBRT as we work to serve the needs of students in Maryland.”
Before being named the VP of Corporate Affairs for North America, Mr. Buckley served as the VP of European Corporate Affairs and prior to that was Head of Global Government Affairs for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), and International Trade Associations for AstraZeneca, based in the company’s London headquarters. Previously, he was the Vice President of US Federal Government Affairs at AstraZeneca where he ran the company’s Washington, DC office, directed the Federal Government Affairs division and served as Vice Chair of AZPAC (the company’s political action committee).
“AstraZeneca and MedImmune are excited to join MBRT in their advocacy for education reform, student achievement and workforce preparedness in Maryland,” Mr. Buckley said. “As a major life sciences employer in the state, it’s vital that we have a strong local workforce to draw from in the future and MBRT’s STEM education programs are essential to fulfilling this need. I look forward to joining my peers on the board.”
Before joining AstraZeneca, Mr. Buckley was Director of Federal Government Affairs at Eli Lilly and Company; prior to that he was Legislative Counsel at PhRMA. He also served as an Assistant Parliamentarian in the United States Senate.
Mr. Buckley received his Bachelor’s degree from Boston College, and his Juris Doctorate from American University, Washington College of Law. He and his wife Amy and their three sons live in Bethesda.
