OUR WORK

 

Nine essential components of a successful education system

Based on the fundamental belief that all children can and must learn at higher levels, MBRT works to ensure that Maryland's students are well prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

We believe the components listed below must be present in an education system in order for students to achieve at the highest levels.

The Nine Essential Components of a Successful Education System, as developed by The Business Roundtable, continue to serve as the basis for MBRT's efforts to affect education reform in Maryland.  We plan our work and measure our achievements based on these standards.

MBRT Committees 2006

The staff of MBRT works with volunteers including business executives, teachers, principals, superintendents, school board members, government officials, community leaders and parents to provide expertise and support to schools and systems that will result in the achievement of higher standards.

   Achievement Counts   
  
Speakers Bureau

Make classroom presentations to high school students on the importance of doing well in school and how it will affect their futures.  Speakers receive training in key messages and presentation skills.

Expertise needed:  " articulate, energetic, diverse cultural/educational background, relates well to teens.
Scope of commitment:  3-hr. training, four 50-min. presentations - fall 2004.
Major focus:  high school freshmen in Allegany, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Cecil, Frederick, Garrett, Harford, Howard, Kent, Montgomery, Prince George's, St. Mary's, Washington Counties and Baltimore City.
  
Speakers Bureau Advisory Panel

Provide assistance in 1) developing specific strategies to expand and improve Speakers Bureau process and messages and 2) evaluating effectiveness of program.

Expertise needed:  experience with Speakers Bureau and needs of high school students.
Scope of commitment:  three 2-hr. meetings.
Major focus:  streamline process; improve message delivery; evaluate effectiveness.

 

  
Corporate Communicators Advisory Panel

Provide input on the most effective ways to communicate with parents in the workplace and on development of Parents Count messages/website.

Expertise needed:  internal corporate communications, newsletter editor, marketing.
Scope of commitment:  three 2-hr. meetings.
Major focus:  expand distribution and increase effectiveness of Parents Count messages.
  
Teen Website Executive Advisory Board

Provide overall strategic direction and coordination of key partners to determine content, presentation and evaluation of impact of teen website.

Expertise needed:  strategic planning, leadership skills.
Scope of commitment:  four 2-hr. meetings.
Major focus:  plan and field test teen website proof of concept.

 

  
Teen Website - Marketing Committee

Develop, ensure implementation and critique the effectiveness of a plan to market teen website to students, parents and educators.

Expertise needed:  public/media relations, marketing, advertising (to youth, a plus).
Scope of commitment:  four 2-hr. meetings.
Major focus:  develop marketing plan for teen website, critique proof of concept.

 

  
Teen Website - Human Resource Advisors

Provide guidance from human resource perspective on implementation of Achievement Counts programs, including Speakers Bureau and teen website.

Expertise needed:  human resource development, hiring.
Scope of commitment:  three 2-hr. meetings.
Major focus:  review/critique elements of Speakers Bureau and teen website messages.

 

  
Teen Website - Student Advisors

Provide input and participate in planning and marketing the teen website.

Expertise needed:  high school students representing a cross section of achievement levels.
Scope of commitment:  four 2-hr. meetings.
Major focus:  provide expert counsel on all phases of development of teen website
  
  
   Technology   
  
Committee on Technology in Education

Provide direction and support for implementing the strategies in the Maryland Technology Plan especially ensuring effective use of technology for teaching, learning, planning and management.

 

   Policy & Management   
  
Strategic Steering Committee
(Board member appointees)

Provide overall strategic direction and coordination of MBRT and its committees, and serve as liaison with MBRT Board of Directors and CEO members of MBRT.  The committee is comprised of senior level representatives of MBRT Board members.

Expertise needed:  strategic planning, leadership skills.
Scope of commitment:  monthly 2-hr. meetings.
Major focus:  conduct due diligence on high school standards/assessments ensure all projects are high quality/on target/within budget.
