Speakers tell us ...

maria
“It’s important for students, no matter what age they are, to hear and learn about careers [and] what it costs to live.”

Maria hopes that through her talks, she’ll be able to give the students something that she didn’t have. When she was young, nobody came in and talked to her about careers or other opportunities. For the students, she has made a decision to become that person.

"“When I was in high school, we had a police man that came into our high school just to speak with us,” she says. “This guy made an impact on me. I wanted to do the same thing with others that he did with me.”

anthonyWHY I SPEAK

- Anthony J.

For Jones, speaking to students is about opening “their eyes to another perspective” and showing them how much they have in common with each other. He likes the challenge of getting through to students.

angeleWHY I SPEAK

- David K.

David remembers what it’s like to be a teenager. Having to figure out your own future is hard enough, but what makes matters worse is that it often seems like everybody else is a step ahead of you. To the contrary, “there’s a lot of stuff they probably don’t know,” he says.

Students tell us ... "

students I should take the next four years really seriously because it will determine what I'll be doing for the rest of my life, whether I'm successful or not.

students

I am going to keep my options more open and look into more programs like Maryland Scholars.

In high school, we have to learn to focus more and think about our career and goals even with the challenges that come with them.

Keep your head in the books and don't let anybody side track you from getting a good education.

Everything in high school counts.

students I can't just act like high school is middle school. I have to pick up the pace, get ready for my future, and do well in school.

You really can't just go along with life thinking that everything will come to you. You have to go out there and get it.

Average isn't enough. I need to challenge myself to be the best I can.

I am not the best student when it comes to my grades, but you have helped me understand that I can change that and be more successful in my four years of high school and college.

students It's never too early to plan.

In the future not everything comes easy and you have to make your own decisions.

My whole life starts a new route when I walk out of 8th grade. I have my whole life ahead of me and it's my choice.

I'm really glad that this speaker came because it helped me realize what I need for college and to have an excellent career and life.

It takes a lot to be a Scholar but it's very rewarding.

If you apply yourself, you can achieve just about anything

students The only way to get to the top is to work hard and aim for more

students Being responsible is very important not only in everyday life but the future.

I plan to take more challenging classes in school to improve my transcript

I will maintain a high GPA so I can qualify for the Maryland Scholars

What I do now reflects on my future. It's better to plan now so that I can prepare myself for the future. It's always best to think positive because the negative can "impact" my future.

Don't wait to plan your future, work hard, never give up, and think about your future.

Everyone is entitled to a good education."

Students reacted positively by providing feedback, participated and shared personal experiences. -Crisfield High, Somerset County

Students were fascinated with information presented. They had little knowledge of the cost of living. The presentation came at a perfect time because my students are researching different lifestyles. -North Caroline High, Caroline County

Students were engaged and active in the presentation. -Southhampton Middle, Harford County

They were attentive and full of questions. -Heather Ridge High, Frederick County

The students were engaged in the presentation. They were interested and well involved. They participated actively because the speaker gave them "tasks" and reasons to share their ideas. -Governor Thomas Johnson High, Frederick County"
