MARYLAND BUSINESS ROUNDTABLE FOR EDUCATION

MBRT Receives National Award for
Vocational Technical Education

Baltimore, MD (5/1/01) --- The Maryland Business Roundtable for Education (MBRT) and its Executive Director, June Streckfus, are being honored for distinguished service to ocational technical education.

The National Association of State Directors of Vocational Technical Education Consortium (NASDVTEc) will present its prestigious national award to Ms. Streckfus at a special ceremony, to be held today, Tuesday, May1, on Capitol Hill.

"The Maryland Business Roundtable for Education represents the 'best of the best' of organizations who have excelled in promoting the vocational technical education system," says NASDVTEc President Dr. June St. Claire Atkinson.  "Students across the country have truly benefited because of the efforts of these great organizations."

MBRT, a coalition of more than 120 leading employers focused on supporting education reform and improved student achievement in Maryland, is being recognized for its Achievement Counts program, a statewide campaign that demonstrates the connection between achievement in school and success in the workplace.

Through a potent combination of highly targeted media messages, parent support, employer involvement, and a speakers bureau of 400 young workers addressing more than 25,000 high school freshmen, Achievement Counts empowers students to rise to the challenge of high academic achievement.

NASDVTEc also cited MBRT for developing the Workforce Skills Survey to identify employment, educational, and workforce skills issues being faced by Maryland's business community.  The survey is used to make educators and economic development leaders aware of the expectations business has for employees as they enter the workforce.

Ms. Streckfus is one of four Marylanders to be recognized by NASDVTEc.  Also being honored at Tuesday's event are:  Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick, State School Superintendent, and the Maryland State Department of Education; Black & Decker, Incorporated; and Dr. Leon Copeland, University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

NASDVTEc is the national leader in shaping the future of vocational technical education.  Its mission is to provide leadership for vocational technical education's role in economic development, educational improvement, and workforce development for the 21st century.
