In an effort to motivate high school students to perform at higher levels, MBRT is reaching out to 8th and 9th grade students to let them know that business values their performance in school and that achievement will provide them with more opportunities and a better chance for a successful future.

The Speakers Bureau was established to make interactive classroom presentations in Maryland high schools.

We're speaking with 8th and 9th grade students
across the State of Maryland

Become a part:

Do you have employees who might be interested and effective in presenting to 8th and 9th in a classroom setting?
(View the sample 8th grade Lesson Plan.)
(View the sample 9th grade Lesson Plan.)

Speaker Profile:

We are looking for energetic, articulate business people to help deliver the Achievement Counts message to young students.

* Ninth graders told us they would be most influenced by young people who had recently entered the workforce, hence our attempt to find younger speakers.  But, we have many "older" speakers who are having a great impact on the kids.

Time Commitment:

Speakers will participate in a 3-hour training session and will receive a training manual and lesson plan.  Speakers are asked to make 3 to 4 (more if desired) 50-minute classroom presentations.  Speakers will be able to select schools, dates and times that are convenient to them.

If you know of an individual(s) interested in participating,

"The Speakers Bureau appears to have a lasting impact on those students and teachers who participate.  MBRT has developed a useful and comprehensive package for their presenters."

Drs. Tom Owens and Frank Hammonds
Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory

"Wow!   What a great experience for 9th graders and myself to interact with business leaders."

Student Reactions to Achievement Counts Speakers

"Because of the information I got from this speaker, I know now more than ever that high school counts a lot.  Your 'career' starts here."

"I learned that people who know what they want to do earlier and have a plan will get further... quicker."

"I didn't realize I needed to start now, I always thought you start in 12th grade."

"I learned I need to work harder than I have been working... and that I also need to concentrate more on school than on boys."

"I am going to work my hardest and will not stop until I get to the top.  I learned that there is a much bigger world than you can dream of."

"What I have learned is that high school is your first chance to become somebody in life."

"You make me want to get better grades."

"You really opened my eyes.  I have a new respect for my parents.  Thank you for being straightforward.  I needed it."

Teacher Reactions to Achievement Counts Speakers

"You bring to our students a perspective educators are unable to duplicate."

"I noticed that during the presentation the students who were most engaged were ones who are not doing well academically for me and never participate much in class.  Somehow this topic really sparked an interest in them."

"Speaker was extremely enthusiastic and got down to the students' level - had students engaged the entire period."

"Held their interest - knew how to talk to them - the best presenter I've had."

"It was obvious that you understand teenagers and took great care to create and give a presentation that kept the students involved and interested."

"It is a great experience for students to see real life businessmen who care enough to come and share their experiences."

"Excellent motivation for students - terrific emphasis in positive experiences and making achievement count."
